Catherwood first visited Egypt in 1823–4, and returned in 1832 to make a series of drawings of Karnak Temple, which formed the basis of a painted panorama exhibited in his friend Robert Burford’s circular viewing room in Leicester Square. Catherwood later travelled to the Americas, and died when the SS Arctic sank off Newfoundland.

A talented artist, Burton published a volume of plates, Excerpta Hieroglyphica (1825–8), and left an important collection of drawings, plans and antiquities, most of which are now in the British Museum. His younger brother was Decimus Burton, architect of the Athenaeum, among other London landmarks.
