“Thanks. We appreciate it. But…” Ky turned her head to look at Regan, who gave her a nod of support. “Actually, the rumors are true this time.”
Mrs. Kallmaker didn’t bat an eye. “I see.”
Was that all she was going to say? Ky waited, but the principal didn’t add anything.
“I know there’s no requirement in our contracts to disclose our relationship to you,” Regan said as if she couldn’t stand the silence. “But we didn’t want you to be taken by surprise should a parent or someone else bring it up.”
Mrs. Kallmaker gave a curt nod. “I appreciate it. Neither of you is supervising the other, so as long as you keep it professional at work, it’s not an issue.”
Regan opened her mouth, and Ky just knew she was going to make a smart-ass quip.
She nudged Regan’s knee with her own. “We will. Thank you.”
Mrs. Kallmaker reached for her pen. “Well, if there’s nothing else…”
Wow. That was possibly the shortest, most painless conversation Ky had ever had in a principal’s office.
They got up and, side by side, walked to the door.
Just as Ky reached out to open it, Mrs. Kallmaker cleared her throat behind them. “One more thing.”
Ky and Regan shared an uh-oh look. Slowly, they turned around.
“If you allow me to say so…I’m happy for the two of you.” Then Mrs. Kallmaker slid her glasses down a bit and focused on the stack of papers in front of her, dismissing them.
Regan beamed. “Thanks,” she said, which Ky belatedly echoed.
She wasn’t aware of stepping outside, but she must have followed Regan because the door clicked shut behind them.
Dazed, Ky stopped in the middle of the front office. “That went well.”
Regan reached out as if to touch Ky but then stopped herself. “Don’t sound so shocked. I told you this visit to the principal’s office would be different.”
“Yeah, you did.”
They waved at the secretary and made their way to the exit.
“But don’t worry,” Regan said as they stepped outside and walked toward the faculty parking lot, “I’m sure I can think of some other ways to get you in trouble.”
Her sultry tone sent tingles up and down Ky’s spine. “Oh yeah? Do any of them involve singing Christmas carols?”
Regan unlocked her car. “Singing? No. I was thinking more of”—she lowered her voice—“moaning and screaming.”
A low groan escaped Ky. She wrenched open the driver’s side door for Regan. “Get in.”
Laughing, Regan brushed past her and climbed behind the wheel.
