She smiled at the fierceness in his voice.
“It’s nothing.” She relaxed her hands on the steering wheel while the tension faded from her.
“It didn’t sound like nothing when you answered the phone.”
“I just ran into my ex, that’s all. Just seeing him made the urge to commit murder rise up in me.”
Myles gave a low chuckle. “Now as an officer of the law, I’m going to act like I didn’t hear that.”
“No, I wouldn’t want you to be labeled as an accessory,” she joked.
“The breakup was that bad?” he asked quietly.
“What would you think if you stopped by your boyfriend’s house and found the waitress from ya’ll favorite diner on her knees giving him head?”
“Ouch.”
Roxxy grunted. “Exactly. He acts like I should have just forgiven him. The motherfucker even tried to blame me—” Roxxy caught herself.
She didn’t want to go into details of her relationship with Korey. There was no point in her getting worked up over the past. She was happy with where she was and who she was currently fantasizing about all the time.
“You know what, I’m sorry,” she breathed. She guided the vehicle to a halt at a stop light. Her gaze flickered to the mirror, and she was happy to see there was no sign of Korey. She’d half expected him to follow her.
“What’s to be sorry for? Our past helps shape the person we are today,” he replied. He gave a slight cough. “Plus, I’m reaping the reward for his mistake.”
“You got that right,” she muttered. The light changed, and she pressed her foot down on the accelerator. It wouldn’t take her long to get home now. The road opened up to a highway and the beautiful land of South Carolina. “So when can I bestow my gift upon you?”
Her heart missed a beat. He hadn’t replied to her text, and she was already mortified that she was taking such brazen steps.
First sending the sexy picture to Myles, then boldly offering herself up to him.
“That’s what I was calling for.” His voice deepened.
She briefly closed her eyes, letting his baritone wash over her. She gripped the wheel tighter, imagining him next to her with his hands sliding down her body.
“I have a couple days off this week and figured if you could pencil me in on your busy sched—”
“When?” she asked, dancing in her seat. Her lips spread into a wide grin at his announcement.
“I could drive down tomorrow.”
“You’d have to get a hotel.” She bit her lip, hating how that sounded. She was a grown woman, but even at her age she didn’t want to have the conversation with her parents about having a man stay over.
Plus, the noise they’d keep up, there was no way she’d be explaining that.
“I’m fine with that as long as you stay there with me.”
“Um, did you think I wouldn’t be staying with you?” She laughed. She immediately began thinking of all things she needed to pack.
Hell, with Myles, she was sure she’d only need her new slutty outfit she’d just purchased.
Chapter 16
Myles glanced at his watch and was ready for this shift to be over. He’d be heading out first thing in the morning to go visit Roxxy. He couldn’t wait to see her. Hearing her voice and seeing her on the screen was nothing compared to being able to feel her and breathe in her scent.
He walked through the precinct toward the conference room where they would be holding their interview with Officer Knight.
As with any potential new member joining the team, he’d looked into her and read her file. She was a generational cop. Her father had retired from Atlanta’s police department. Her brother was a SWAT officer in Miami. Her grandfather had been a cop.
Policing was in her blood.
Already Myles had respect for her.
“Lover boy made it,” Iker announced when Myles strolled through the door.
Today’s meeting would be in the boardroom, not their usual conference room where they held their briefs.
Jokes flew through the air as he made his way to his seat. Zain, Brodie, Iker, Ash, and Declan were seated on the same side of table. The candidate would sit opposite the team where they could conduct their team interview.
“Whatever,” he muttered. He sat back and glided a hand across his bald head.
“I hear you’re taking a couple days off.” Zain leaned over.
Myles glanced him. Zain’s eyes twinkled, revealing his friend was up to something.
“Yeah, I am. I haven’t had any real days off in a while.” Myles shrugged.
“Going to go visit your girl?” Zain’s lips grew into a grin.
