I snorted with only partial amusement. “They thought they did their homework but didn’t look deep enough.”
“Only thing I’ve never understood about Fiona is why she didn’t go rogue. She has the skills.”
I shook my head. “Fiona has the skills, and a little bit of the darkness in her. I think on some level, she works for the good side because she is afraid of what she could become if she didn’t. When she lets her guard down, there is more darkness hiding in there. She hides it well. She has always been the one to help people. To take care of them. Over time, she expanded that to include what she loves to do.”
“Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Anyhoo, I’m collecting all the stuff I can on the Russians, anything that can be used against them. With Fiona’s help I’ve already been able to send proof to the Italians about Ivan’s plan. He’s got someone on the inside there as well. This wasn’t a whim of his.”
“And the rest?”
“Saving it for a rainy day. In case you need it later. Her idea. She sent a pic of rain.”
Chapter 15
Fiona
“Aren’t you done yet?” The guard snarled from his corner.
“Not quite. I’m not just hacking into someone’s bank account and wiring money. I have to leave careful trails, change the dates of withdrawals and deposits. It all takes time to make sure it is done right. The last thing any of us need is to have Dillan and the Italians figure it all out. Frankly, I’m tempted to take a little for myself and start over somewhere far away from here.”
He chuckled. “I bet Ivan would make a deal with you. Reserve your work for just us, and he will give you that money. You can live anywhere in the world that you want. We’d keep an eye on your brother and father, and you could finally be free.”
Before a couple of months ago, that would have been very tempting. Too bad for them, I had someone I could no longer leave behind. Someone who was now part of my heart. My soul. Which was how I knew he was getting close. Jorge couldn’t tell me anything without us getting caught. He tried, and I taught him a lesson. But the fact that he was picking up every crumb I could leave behind was answer enough.
“Guess we will have to see what happens after this, won’t we?”
“True.” My new chatty friend said. “If you betray us, or the plan fails, then you won’t have much freedom or use - not on the computer anyway.”
“I doubt I would be much use the other way either. I’m a geek through and through. Not much goes on in my life in the real world.”
He sat up straight. “Does that mean you are a virgin? Please tell me you are a virgin.”
I feigned confusion. “Uh, yeah. Why? What does that matter?”
His eyes sparked hungrily. “I love me a virgin. Nice, tight…”
“Neil, keep in your pants.” Ivan said from the door. “If anyone gets take virginity, is me.”
Ew. I’d rather have Neil. At least he wasn’t nearly my father’s age. “That won’t be an issue though because this is going to work just fine. My plans always do.”
