Anyone who wants to know the true history of the Anglo-Scottish Borders in the sixteenth century should read George MacDonald Fraser’s superbly lucid and entertaining account: The Steel Bonnets (1971). Those who wish to meet the real Sir Robert Carey can read his memoirs, The Memoirs of Robert Carey (edited by F.H. Mares, 1972) and some of his letters in the Calendar of Border Papers.
About P.F. Chisholm
PATRICIA FINNEY is an author and journalist. She has written under the pen names P.F. Chisholm and Grace Cavendish. Her first novel A Shadow of Gulls, won the 1977 David Higham Award for Best First Novel of the year.
