LIST OF HERBS/CURIOS AND THEIR USES

From here, you will have to have the judgment to know which herbs to use in what manner or for what purpose. The recipes given previously in this book use traditional herbs and items found in these mountains, whether naturally or, historically, in local stores. Each herb or item has its own particular potency for the heading it is under and may be stronger than an herb neighboring it. Every conjurer worked differently in Appalachia. Some folks would use a handful of herbs available to them, while others had storehouses for when they were in need; the whole natural world was the conjurer's toolbox.

While things vary in our tradition from other folk magic systems, the spirit is generally the same. Use what you've got. If you live in these hills, then a lot of the herbs and things below are available to you in the woods or through connections with farmers or hunters. Substituting one herb for another listed here is fine, but be mindful of its potency. Fresh herbs used and allowed to dry in hex bags may be stronger for you than starting out with a dried herb. Just like with the witching sticks and the bones, the roots will speak to you. What they require or what power they give to one conjurer oftentimes isn't the same for another. For example, you might feel that High John the Conqueror root is stronger that ginseng; but to another, ginseng might feel stronger. So listen to everything.

This is a large list, but it is far from complete. The flora and fauna of Appalachia are almost endless and surely abundant! There are many things used in regions that vary greatly from those used in, say, just a county or two over. Listed here are those (usually) easily accessible to you, whether in grocery stores or roadside ditches. Some may even be growing in your backyard already!
