Chapter Sixteen

SHANE

My heart breaks for what Nora is going through, and the fact that Heath and Mya can relate to their friend missing as well, but I also can’t lie, my heart is soaring with the revelation that Mya wants me to come to Maine with her.

I thought she wanted to leave and maybe regretted the time we spent together, but I do agree with her idea of getting the security footage from the Maine train station and comparing it to the footage we have here.

Once Nora calms down and washes her face, I pay for everyone’s breakfast as we all head back to the precinct to brief Commander Doyle.

Mya calls her boss and talks with him about her theory, and he agrees to it, also letting her know, there is no news on Kim.

When we walk into the precinct, Commander Doyle is waiting for us. We all walk into the conference room and begin to debrief him.

He rubs his hands down his face and says, “I’m going to need to let the public know that we have brought in the FBI with this latest murder, otherwise, they may think we aren’t taking this seriously enough.”

“I agree,” Mya tells him. “Hopefully, we will get something off the security footage in Largo that will help us.”

“Sir, I’d like to go with the Agents back to Largo. I’m hoping we can not only get this morning’s footage, but of the last three murders.”

“Fine. Riley, will you be going as well?” he asks her.

“No, Sir, I’ll be staying here and going back through our footage as well as the files, that way if anyone has any questions, I’m here with answers,” she tells him, and he seems pleased with that.

“What about the two Directors at Boston General?” he asks.

“They both have seemed to have disappeared for the moment, but I’m sure they will turn up. Neither one can afford to lose their jobs at the moment, though if they are involved in the thefts of the medication, then they lose everything anyways,” Mya tells him. “I will continue to monitor their accounts,” she adds.

This seems to placate the Commander, and he nods.

“Fine, sounds like we are doing everything we can at the moment. I will put out the information on them, asking for the public's help in locating them as they may have viable information to the case, but I will ensure to emphasize they are not persons of interest in these cases.”

“That’s perfect,” Mya tells him with a smile, and the man actually smiles back at her.

I don’t think I have ever seen the Commander smile before, to be honest.

“What?” he asks, looking over at me.

“Nothing, Sir,” I say, not wanting to irritate or offend him before I leave with Mya.

My phone rings, and it’s Max.

“Max, do you have the identification of the victims?” I ask.

“I do. You are more than welcome to come down and get them. I will be performing the autopsy on both victims soon. We still have not received the toxicology reports on our last two victims yet.”

“That’s fine. I don’t think they will say anything much different than the others,” I tell him before adding, “I’ll be down there shortly to pick up the items.”

I hang up the phone and look at the Commander, “Max has found the victims identification.”

“Good, go pick it up and make the notifications. We need to find the person responsible for these murders as soon as possible. Hopefully Maine can shed some light for us,” he says before walking out of the conference room.

“Come on, Nora, let’s do this,” I say as we both stand up.

“Let us know if you need any help with next of kin details,” Mya says.

“I will definitely call you when we have the names, so we don’t have to return until after the notifications have been completed,” I tell her with a smile, and she smiles back.

“I’d say get a room, but you two have already done that,” Heath pipes in.

I watch as Mya’s face turns red and love it when she blushes.

Nora and I walk out of the conference room, going straight for the front doors.

When we get in the car, Nora asks, “Is this serious?”

I look over at her questioningly.

“Are you and Mya serious, or is this a fling?”

I smile, “This is serious. I have never felt like this with anyone. She makes my world brighter than I ever thought it could be. I know it seems sudden, but I can’t imagine life without her in it,” I tell her honestly.

“Does she feel the same way?”

“I think so, but we haven’t really had a chance to have that conversation yet,” I tell her.

“Then I am very happy for you both,” she says with a smile, but it doesn’t reach her eyes, and I wonder if it’s because she’s thinking about her husband or her best friend.
