Reasons why Prem did weird things but is a good man
Thing he did
Why it actually is good
•Took Leena’s tickets back with no explanation and told her to go to Europe
•Was protecting her from eye-murder by Mumbai mafia
•Hid wealthy industrialist family background
•Did not want people to treat him differently or try to marry him with their sisters
•Worked at Exxon
•Tried to earn on his own for first time
•Sleeping on mattress under onions for 15 years
•Is humble and simple
•Stayed in America and built successful company instead of returning to India and joining existing successful company
•Excellent work ethic, perseverance, business shrewdness, independence
•Had mental collapse during beauty pageant judging
•This maybe was not great
•Primary means of transportation is bicycle
•Forgetting now why this is good. He almost died on it, did you know?
•Visited Hemant in hospital every day even though they were kind of enemies
•Too long to write here. Will explain verbally or in separate leaflet
Sitting before the whiteboard, Leena reverted back to her school days and raised her hand when she had questions or objections, both of which she had many, including:
“Papa, you knew about his family the whole time? How? When? And you didn’t tell me?”
“What sisters?”
“I told you he was simple and humble years back! Why was it bad then but good now?”
“What are these onions everyone keeps mentioning?”
Hemant explained at length his admiration of Prem’s riches-to-rags-to-riches story as well as the mutual respect he and Prem had fostered by helping each other out over the years. To which Leena rejoined, “Nonsense. You only like him now because of his wealthy family.” To which Hemant responded, “Wait for the leaflet.”
Beena addressed Leena’s alarm that Prem had sent Indian celebrities to her store to plead his case. “Nobody sent anybody. I told them the sad tale of Prem’s love, and they came on their own. Their flight to Disney World isn’t until Wednesday so they had some free time.”
When Leena ran out of questions and objections, she commenced sulking. Hemant flipped the board around to reveal the second part of the presentation.
Options
1.Tell Prem there is no chance
2.Marry someone else (who is not gay but maybe is still a doctor)
3.Do nothing
4.Forgive Prem and see the person he really is
“I told you don’t include the doctor part, she won’t like it,” Beena said after Hemant wrapped up his allocution.
“But I like it,” Hemant explained.
“Where is the eraser?”
“I lost it long time back.”
“Okay, then give me an old sock.”
“What old sock?”
“Any old sock!”
As her father and Beena attempted to sort out the matter, Leena pondered her options. She didn’t like being pressured; at the same time, the format of the pressure appealed to her logical business side. She was lost in thought for a long time. Beena left to tend to Prem, and Hemant grew tired and returned to bed. Viren Bhai completed his outdoor yogic activities and came in.
