“Hi, Kara. Looking good.”
“Jace. You’ve changed. Not for the better. Excuse me.”
Something flickered in his eyes and he mouthed an apology. “Sorry,” he whispered so low she wasn’t quite sure she’d heard him correctly.
“You. How about a drink for old times’ sake?” he asked in a much louder voice.
“Jace... Please...”
Jace circled her like a lion stalking a gazelle. His stance was predatory, not even a flicker of the tenderness and emotions from the past, when they were each other’s everything.
“Or a ride. You used to ride a long, long time and never get tired with me.”
“You’re despicable,” she muttered.
Jace pulled away, but in his deep blue eyes she saw a hint of something of the old Jace. Shame.
He took her hand, unfurled her palm and gestured to the bikers.
“Anyone got a pen?”
Hoots and whistles as a biker rushed over with a pen. A thrill of awareness and fear rushed through her as Jace scribbled a phone number on her open hand.
“Here’s my number, sweetheart. Give me a call if you want a nice long ride all night long.”
Dear Reader,
Motorcycles have always fascinated me. I have friends who ride and expressed how free you feel in sensing the world around you more than when you are boxed in in a car.
When I set out to write Escape from Devil’s Den, I knew Jace and Kara would be special characters. Jace loves his motorcycle and escaping on his bike. Kara loathes and fears motorcycles after a tragedy involving one when she was younger. Motorcycles are one reason Kara and Jace broke up years ago.
When FBI agent Jace has the chance to infiltrate a notorious outlaw motorcycle club that’s stealing high-value jewelry, he grabs it. Little does he know, Kara will get involved when the gang targets her store.
It will take all Jace’s fierce resolve to keep Kara safe while not blowing his cover, and all Kara’s strength to trust Jace as she rides with him on this dangerous journey.
Special thanks to the motorcycle enthusiasts who helped me: Joy Kenyon Allen, Jill Blonder, John Burden and Matt Mastrony.
Happy reading!
