“Everything is fine. You have to remember that’s my best friend. I’m gonna feel a little down at times. I just can’t talk to him right now.” He looked at his cell and turned it off. He got up and threw it on the couch and walked away. Even though Kev fell in love with me, he and Jason were friends and the fact that everything went down the way it did was hurting him I’m sure. Seemed as if he was realizing that his relationship with Jason was no more; he had to close that door for good.

“Come on, let’s get ready to go.” He smiled and led me to the bedroom.

I followed him, deep in thought.

Kev must have known I was very worried. Because he continued with his reassuring words. “Don’t worry, baby, everything is fine, you understand. Don’t you worry about a thing. I’m with you, you’re my wife. You hear me?” He touched my chin and pulled my head up. “You hear me?”

I knew he was for real. “Yes, I hear you. Everything is everything.” I smiled halfheartedly.

While I sat waiting for Kev to come out the bathroom I got angry thinking about Jason’s call to Kev. I didn’t feel sorry for Jason. I knew it was some kind of act or trick to get me back.

“Manipulation!” I shouted and shook my head. I knew Jason knew that Kev could get in contact with me and possibly talk me into going back to him like he had done so many times before.

“He got a lot of nerve!” I chuckled. “He sitting in Aruba with Eva and claiming to be worried about me. Wow, he’s crazy, a dang-on psychopath!” Then I whispered, “I was crazy too for putting up with him. No more!”

“Reese! Reese! You okay, babe? Why you sitting there like that?” Kev asked, exiting the bathroom.

He was touching my shoulder and trying to get me to respond. I finally looked at him and said. “Oh, hey, you scared me.” I grabbed my heart as if I was frightened. “What did you say?” I asked.

“I asked you if you were all right, baby. You were sittin’ here in deep thought. What were you thinkin’ about?”

I looked at him for a long time and meditated on my response. “Babe, I’m fine,” I lied, not wanting to ruin the day any more than Jason’s phone call had. “I was just sitting here thinking about you.”

I got up off the couch and put my arms around Kev and gave him a hug and a kiss on the cheek. “I love you,” I said as I was holding him tight. I glared into the wall as I held on to his muscular frame and wished that I could tell him everything.

“Where we goin’ first, honey?”

“To eat, I am so hungry.” I held my stomach to show him.

“Let’s go,” he replied.

I showered and got dressed. I grabbed my purse and walked out of the suite behind Kev.

“Let’s walk,” I said. “It will be fun.” I smiled.

“All right, let’s walk.” He pointed down the street toward McDonald’s and laughed. “You wanna go there?”

I smiled and said, “No. Stop playin’. I can eat McDonald’s in Columbus. I didn’t come all the way here for that.”

“Babe,” Kev said, “I think we both got far more than we came here for.”

Chapter 24

Confessions

By the time we got back to our suite, we were exhausted and had all kinds of shopping bags. I went through the shopping bags looking at all the things we had bought for the boys while Kev sat and watched me.

“You just gonna sit there and watch me? No help?” I teased.

“Babe, I’m exhausted, to tell ya the truth.” Kev sat on the edge of the bed, taking his tennis shoes off.

I was ranting on and on about everything I had seen on the strip that day, the crazy people, and the hustle and bustle of Vegas. “I absolutely love this place!” I screamed, then ran over to where he sat and jumped on him. “I wonder what the boys are doing.”

Kev laughed because he knew I wanted to call them or have them come up for a little while. “Baby, go ’head and call ’em. Maybe they can come up and eat with us or something.”

“Okay, I would love that.” I went over to my purse, grabbed my cell and dialed Toya. “Hey, what y’all doing?”

“Hey, Reese, we at the pool. The boys are havin’ a blast! We met a nice guy who has his sons here too, and they are about the same age as the boys,” Toya added.

“Okay, sounds like you met a friend,” I joked.

“I don’t know. He’s pretty cool though. I didn’t think I’d hear from you for a few days!” Toya laughed.

“Yeah, I just missed the boys.”

“I can bring them up if you like.”

“Oh, no, they sound like they are having fun. I’ll call them later. Tell ’em I love them.” I smiled and hung up, walked back over to Kev, and sat on his lap. “Well, back to you then.”

I gently touched his face, then I took my finger and outlined his eyes and nose with it. “You are so beautiful, Kev,” I whispered in his ear.

“Reese, baby, men aren’t beautiful.”

“You are.”
