Mike and I nod in acknowledgment.

Turning on his heel, Nate begins to make his way back to the kitchen, his toned ass on full display as he struts away. A burst of laughter escapes my lips at the sight, the sound echoing softly in the cozy confines of the room.

“Dude…” Mike calls out after him, his voice laced with playful incredulity.

Cain enters the room from the bedroom. With a soft thud, he sets down a hamper overflowing with plush blankets, the fabric spilling out in gentle waves like a cascade of warmth and comfort.

“Right,” he declares with a determined nod, his eyes alight with purpose as he surveys the room. “I’m going to head out and set these up, then grab Mavis.”

“Thank you!” I shout out as he exits the house.

The campfire crackles and pops. The air fills with the comforting scent of burning wood, mingling with the tantalizing aroma of food cooking over the flames.

Amidst the rustic charm of the campsite, my grandmother sits in a fold-up chair, a soft blanket draped across her knees. The flickering firelight illuminates her weathered face.

Mike and I share a log and a cozy blanket wraps around us, offering protection against the cool night air. His warmth seeps into my side. As we lean against each other with our fingers intertwining, I can’t help but feel a sense of contentment wash over me.

Nearby, Nate sits on the forest floor, his gaze fixed on the crackling flames.

Meanwhile, Cain stands tall and confident, his silhouette outlined against the backdrop of the night sky. With practiced ease, he tends to the food. The scent of roasting hotdogs fills the air, mingling with the earthy fragrance of the surrounding forest.

Above us, the moon shines between the towering trees, its gentle light filtering through the dense canopy to bathe the campsite in a soft, silvery glow.

Nate hands Cain a hotdog bun. Cain nestles the steaming hotdog inside, the scent of grilled meat wafting temptingly from the bun.

With a warm smile, Cain extends the finished hotdog towards my nan, her face illuminated by the gentle glow of the fire. “For you, Mavis,” he offers graciously, his voice carrying a touch of genuine affection.

She accepts the hotdog with a grateful nod, “Thank you, dear,” she replies.

Cain’s attention turns to me, his eyes sparkling mischievously as he reaches for another hotdog. He presents it to me with a playful smirk, his words dripping with playful charm. “For the beautiful lady,” he declares, his tone teasing.

I feel a blush creeping into my cheeks at his compliment.

Glancing over at my nan, I catch the twinkle of amusement in her eyes, a silent acknowledgment of the playful banter between Cain and me.

Accepting the hotdog with a grateful smile, I can’t help but chuckle at Cain’s playful antics.

We savor the simple pleasure of biting into our hotdogs, the flavors mingling with the smoky essence of the campfire.

Nan breaks the comfortable silence with a soft observation. “The moon is beautiful tonight,” she remarks, her voice carrying a note of awe as she tilts her head back to gaze at the celestial orb hanging high in the night sky.

Following her gaze, I lift my eyes to the moon.

A smile tugs at the corners of my lips as I contemplate the moon’s timeless beauty. For as long as I can’t remember, it has been a constant companion, a silent guardian watching over me in the darkest of nights. Its ethereal glow had guided me through moments of uncertainty and fear, offering solace and reassurance in times of need.

With a mouthful of hotdog, Mike leans in to kiss my cheek, his words dripping with playful charm.

“It’s not as beautiful as my Tessie,” he declares.

My nan chuckles softly. “I do agree with you there, dear,” she affirms with a knowing smile.

I roll my eyes with a playful scoff.

Before I can’t protest further, Nate interjects with a sly comment, “It’s true, Tessie.” His tone is laced with playful mischief.

“Oh, stop it,” I retort, unable to suppress a grin at the good-natured teasing.

But Nate’s words linger in the air, a subtle acknowledgment of the truth behind Mike’s affectionate declaration. Caught off guard by his unexpected agreement, I shoot him a playful glare, only to meet with a mischievous smirk from my nan.

“So…Cain, Nate, are you with anyone?”

My nan’s question hangs in the air. A palpable tension settles over the group, the crackling of the fire the only sound breaking the awkward silence. I feel Mike’s hand tighten around mine, a silent reassurance amidst the discomfort.

Nate’s response betrays his unease. “Uhh…” he stammers, clearly caught off guard by the unexpected question.

Before the awkwardness can linger any longer, Cain steps in, his easy going demeanor helping to diffuse the tension. “Guess I am just looking for someone special, Mavis,” he replies with a charming smile.

But Cain didn’t let the moment linger, quickly shifting gears with a playful joke to lighten the mood. “Why, are you wanting to go on a date with me, Mavis?”

My nan bursts into laughter at Cain’s lighthearted remark, the sound ringing out through the clearing like a melody of relief. “Oh, stop it, you,”

The rest of us join in laughing, the tension melting away.

As the night wears on and the gentle crackle of the fire fills the air with a soothing rhythm, my nan rises gracefully from her chair with the soft blanket she had been using. With a gentle smile, she approaches me and delicately places the blanket on the log beside me, a silent gesture of care and consideration.

“I’m getting tired, my dears,” she announces softly, her voice carrying a note of gentle weariness. Turning to Cain with a warm smile, she makes her request. “Cain, may you take me back, please?”
