What a boost. I guess it was hell-of-a lot better than gaining the exp for actually torching those monsters after all.

Impressed with my first time using a level accelerant I looked over at my rewards. I gave 40 points to my stamina and eight toward agility. Realizing we were heading for a big boss fight, I knew my stamina gauge being juiced up would come in handy.

Not to mention these variety of poisons:

Black Poison: weakens functionality of the brain, and mutates the liver. Additional side effects consist of fever, hives, and nausea. Duration: between 3-10 minutes.

Sheep Poison: Turns any opponent under level 100 into a level 5 sheep. Duration: between 3-10 minutes.

Itch Poison: Causes uncontrollable need to scratch. Duration between 3-10 minutes.

The dragon scale gave me a temporary ability to turn into a full-sized dragon, which could come in handy. While my disguise charm could turn me into a dragon, it was limited to their humanoid forms.

“Ah, I see your stats are well fed!” Rufian beamed. “Let us head off then. Are you ready?”

“Yeah. Let’s finish this.”

CHAPTER FIFTY-FIVE

I was thrown by how easy it was for us to locate the Grimoire. Rufian teleported us to Grusei, a district five region.

I remembered the first time I landed in one of those, in an area of Senterra called Mulusk, right where my journey began. Shit, it felt like forever since I got here, even though in reality it had only been a few days. My journey with Rufian was nearing its end, and I knew once that he got his book and I got my shard that we would have to part ways.

A split that would be beneficial for everyone. With that in mind, I knew I couldn’t let him leave with the Grimoire, and I had to do everything I could to stop him from erasing the orcs, dragons, fae and goblins off the face of Thalian.

Then again, there was also a possibility that he wouldn’t let me leave with the crystal shard alive. So again, I was faced with a difficult decision. Planning ahead for all of this backfiring, I spent the next few minutes in Rufian's company assessing our surroundings, searching for routes, and keeping my guard on high alert. In Grusei, everything was painfully still, until we entered an area that looked like the slums.

The slums were far from charming. Narrow, dusty alleys were lined with ramshackle homes made of wood and old, tattered clothes. A multitude of hooded people filled the streets, some in layered rags while others in shabby clothes. All of them spoke in hushed tones and we walked on by, staying away from our unfamiliar faces as much as possible. In the night’s darkness, gloominess seemed to fill the air and a thick smell of garbage lingered over everything.

The streets of the slums were like an open wound, with each sewer hole and cracked pavement reflecting decay and despair. The further we walked through this other side of town, the more intense my discomfort grew. Walls of crumbling buildings were decorated with faded graffiti, their windows grimy and taped up with plastic sheets to keep out the cold. I saw the torn remains of clothes, bits of metal, and furniture strewn across alleyways, every piece proof that poverty had clutched its claws into these people's lives.

As I kept a watchful eye around me, I noticed a group of shady looking individuals huddled around a dimly lit alleyway, the same alleyway that Rufian was interested in. My instincts told me to steer clear of their shadows, but Rufian seemed drawn to the group, with a curious glint in his eyes.

“Let's check it out,” he said, before I could even protest.

I followed him reluctantly, my hands itching to slip my cyber gears on. But not for them, for him. Around a group of people, that man was unpredictable.

As we got closer, I could see that the group of ten consisted of mixed races. In Mavriel, this was rare, and it got me thinking that we were in the land of hybrids. Humans, orcs, goblins, and even dragons, all mixed with fae. Their phenotypes varied, but they all shared the same attitude—we were trespassers, and they didn’t take kind to outsiders.

“Hey, you two,” one of the middle-aged men called out, his voice gruff and menacing. “What brings you here?”

“We're just passing through,” Rufian replied, his tone casual. “If you’d push aside, my associate and I would like to head down this alleyway and—”

“No deal,” he refused, cutting Rufian off. “You’re a pure blood, and so are you. We don’t want any trouble.”

“We are no trouble at all,” Rufian insisted. “We merely would like to—”
