I sat there like a fool, but I really wanted to go down there and smack the taste out of his lying mouth. Here I am putting up with all of his shenanigans and he continues to make me look like a fool, I thought. I kept my eyes on him and started talking to myself under my breath. “I’m so tired of this idiot! Ugh!”
He walked out the theatre, then snapped his fingers and turned around and headed back toward his seat like he had forgotten something. I leaned up in my seat to make sure I didn’t miss anything. He motioned his hand for the chick to come with him, so she got up to follow.
The theatre was pretty crowded and the previews were still rolling so when the light from the screen shined, it lit the theatre up for a second, long enough for me to see the chick. She got up and turned her head around toward my seat; my mouth went wide open. Imagine my surprise to see my best friend, Eva, taking my man’s hand as he led her out the theatre. First off, I thought he was out of town, and second, there’s the Eva factor; now I knew why she never answered my call. I was so embarrassed, like everybody in the theater knew he was my man and she was my best friend. My emotions were raging within me. One minute I wanted to hurt them as bad as I was hurt, the next minute I wanted to storm down there and confront them, give ’em a piece of my mind.
I sat there dumbfounded and staring at the movie screen with no idea of what I was watching. My happy little getaway was out the window.
A few minutes later they came back in, hand in hand with treats. They were seated a couple of rows down from me and hugged and kissed the entire time. They had me in my seat mumbling under my breath, “This chick is dirty! Look at them. Oh my God I’ma get her. I’ma snatch her weave out as soon as we leave. Better yet, I’ma call her husband, Adam, and tell him to come up here. Then let’s see what’s gonna happen. If I called him that would sure enough kill both those birds down there!”
Even though my anticipation to question them was off the chart, I decided to wait. I knew I needed to calm down and figure out how to confront them without Jason going bananas on me. I knew if I showed out in the middle of this flick he would beat the crap out of me right then, so I waited.
As soon as the movie was out and the credits rolled I got out of my seat and made sure I was standing in the lobby when they came out.
“Jason!” I hollered while I watched them hold hands and look into each other’s eyes, talking and giggling.
Jason turned and Eva turned around too. Eva’s whole expression changed when she realized it was me who called Jason’s name. She wasn’t all giggles then. She couldn’t even look my way and she immediately let Jason’s hand go.
He, on the other hand, looked like he couldn’t care less. He looked at Eva when she let his hand go and laughed, then turned to me and hollered back, “Yeah, what’s up, boo?” He was so arrogant and obviously didn’t care that he was busted at all. “What up, Reese?” He smiled, and held up his finger as if to say “wait a minute,” then he whispered something in Eva’s ear, and walked away from her and over to me. He grabbed me around my waist and kissed me on the cheek.
“Wha’ you doin’ here? You smell good, girl.” He kissed my neck, then held on to me a little longer before he finally let me go. There were all kinds of thoughts racing through my mind. I couldn’t believe him, I was outraged. No, this man isn’t gonna play me like this. After all he has done to me, and to top it all off, the woman he has been cheatin’ with is my best friend. I never saw this one coming at all. They both had pulled the rug from underneath me.
I was tensed up and pushed him back. “Jason!” I said; then I punched his chest as hard as I could. I didn’t care if he hit me back; this was the last straw.
He quickly grabbed me around my waist again and whispered in my ear, “Listen.” He tugged me, making my body jerk. “You better not make a scene in here you understand me?”
I never replied. The whole time he spoke in my ear I watched Eva looking at us. We met eye to eye and I gave her a nasty look, letting her know there was no me and her ever again. She stood there twirling her weave through her fingers and then she looked away.
Jason continued, “I’m not playin’, Reese.” Then he whispered, “I’ll be home in a few. We can deal wit’ this then.” He kissed me again on my cheek, long this time, backed away, and went back over where Eva was standing.
I was confused. Here he was standing there with my best friend, the woman who knew everything there was to know about me. The woman who cried with me when I was going through it and laughed with me at better times, the woman who Jason sent with me on trips. She was my best friend, and now here they were, standing in front of me, together? I never imagined this one in a billion years. I missed that bulletin.
The only thing that could possibly come out of my mouth as I stood there looking like a helpless puppy was, “Wow! Really, Eva?” I held my hand out and pointed to her. She turned her head and looked away as if she was sorry. “Eva, forget about what you’re doing to me. If you think about nothing else remember that you are married!” I screamed.
They both laughed, Jason showing his white teeth and his cute dimples. I stood there furious, holding my cup of soda. I watched Eva and waited for what I thought would be an apology. She gave me an apology, all right, one she could have kept! She swung that weave around, then said, “I’m sorry, Reese, but he was too much of a temptation for me to pass up. I didn’t want you to tell me how he was; I wanted to know for myself.” She laid her grimy hands across then down Jason’s chest. She confessed with a smug look on her face. Jason stood there smiling like the whole thing was hilarious to him. I was gonna get her.
Jason answered his cell and walked away. I knew that was my chance to get her so I walked toward her. While I watched him, Eva interrupted my thought.
“This doesn’t have to get ugly, Reese, please let’s just—” she said, backing away from me before I cut her off.
“Let’s just what, Eva? Huh? You’re supposed to be my friend! I guess now I get what Julius was saying all those years ago when he tried to tell me you tried to get at him too, huh!” I yelled. My eyes shifted to Jason over to the side, laughing on his cell with someone, probably a whole other chick while we stood there looking absolutely stupid.
“My husband doesn’t have to know. Please, Reese.” Eva ran her hand across her face nervously while she whispered.
I watched her move her hand, making her wedding rings bling. I walked up to her, looked around the crowded theater, and whispered. “Oh, he gonna know this, guarantee ya that one!” If her husband found this out, it would get even messier seeing he’s the one who kept Jason out of jail. Eva knew this just as much as I did.
I couldn’t take it anymore, her pleading and Jason standing there, laughing on his cell like this was some kinda joke. I was so tired of being disrespected and somebody was gonna pay for it tonight. My emotions were through the roof, felt like killing her.
I took my cup of soda and threw it all on Eva. It felt good, too, and messing up her designer clothing felt even better ’cause I knew how much she loved them. I laughed and thought, she probably loves the clothes more than she loves her husband, to tell the truth.
“Oh my God! Why you do that?” she cried.
I was breathing hard and mad as fire at her. “’Cause you are a scandalous skank, Eva, that’s why!” I screamed out in tears. Even though I didn’t think before I threw it, it was on. “You wanna stand here with that crappy apology? You’re supposed to be my best friend!”
A crowd of people had gathered around, laughing and pointing. Eva was drenched in soda. She was shaking all over and her yellow sundress was turning red from my red pop.
I watched her standing there, crying; then I turned and looked at Jason putting his cell up and running over to me.
“Didn’t I tell you to go home?” He smacked me as hard as he could in the middle of the theater. I stumbled backward, falling into a movie display. Jason came right after me. He bent down next to where I fell.
“I told you don’t make a scene, didn’t I? Go home now! Before somebody call the police, stupid!” I was humiliated and once again all he was worried about was himself!
He walked out the theatre, never looking behind, leaving Eva and me in the theater.
I never told Eva’s husband anything because I knew Jason would kill him and I would feel terrible and responsible if Jason did something to that man.
The police came before I could leave, and arrested me for assault. Heck, they never got arrested for throwing drinks on reality shows. Guess this is real life.
At the police station I called Jason’s cell but he wouldn’t answer. I was stuck down there without bail and without anyone but Jason and Eva knowing where I was. Go figure, a few hours ago both of them would have been the first two I would’ve called to come to my rescue if I were in trouble; now they were the last.
I heard the guard come in again. “You can make another call since you never reached anyone.”
I cried I was so happy. I knew they didn’t give you two calls, or I didn’t think they did. I walked down the hall in an orange oversized jumpsuit and some brown plastic sandals they had given me in place of my heels. I watched my pretty pedicured toes as I walked because they didn’t give out socks, no matter how cold it was.
All I wanted to do was enjoy one night out to myself before Jason came back and continued to make my life a living nightmare. Not only did it get spoiled, I lost a so-called friend.
I wondered who I should call. It couldn’t be Julius ’cause he was already wanting to take the boys from me. That was all the ammo he would need. I picked up the phone.
“Five minutes, ma’am.” I turned and saw the guard behind the desk.
