75 – Surrender
AVA COULD HEAR VOICES. She looked around. She was in a familiar bedroom. A picture of Anthony, Ava, and Madeleine sat on her bedside table. She breathed deeply. This was not the location she’d entered into the device. She dropped her head into her hands. It had either been overridden or hard coded to bring her here.
She could hear her husband’s voice.
She recalled what that messenger man had said. He’d known she’d kill him. So why did he have the device at all if he knew what she’d do?”
Then she thought of the evil presence that grabbed at her as she tumbled down some kind of tunnel. It was true. Things were not as they seem.
She heard her name. There were footsteps.
The door burst open. Their weapons trained on her. Then she knew. It was a setup. The messenger knew what he was doing all along. The shack was a setup.
She raised her arms.
She surrendered.
76 – Surprise, surprise
AARON SAT AT HIS DESK with his intelligence report displayed on the screen. He ran his eyes over what had been written so far.
He thought of Mrs Rose and the warm attraction to jobs that fitted with your name—she could’ve been a botanist. She would’ve loved that. He thought of Mrs Perdu and was curious about her name. The online dictionary revealed a French origin with meanings including hidden and concealed. Aaron nodded in agreement. But the meaning that surprised him most: a soldier on a dangerous mission. He chuckled.
He returned his thoughts to the intelligence report. His investigation was all but over thanks to his seventies man. Yesterday seemed so far away. Beatles lyrics maybe? Not seventies, maybe sixties. He was flippant and wasn’t sure how to word the strange events in his report. He wondered what this decade was called. A knock on his door brought him back to the present.
He looked up. “Well hello my friend the analyst. How are you, John?” Aaron stood up to greet him. “You all up-to-date?”
“I am, Aaron. But there’s something I wanted to tell you about.”
Aaron swallowed.
“Our French friends detected the Professor’s activities by the electrical components he was importing from their borders.”
“I wondered about that.”
“Our assessment team made some interesting comments.”
“Yes?”
“There were many components.”
“Meaning?”
“They believe more than one device was made.”

It was early morning and Lucas was in his cell. He spent twelve hours a day in a small three by four metre room. Lucas sat on his bed, waiting for the first muster of the day, thinking of Isabella.
It was his birthday.
He stared at the grey floor. He noticed a tinge of blue. Staring harder, now a large blue blob. He felt the panic grow. He moved back on his bed. Some small sparks and it appeared.
A birthday cake!
Lucas’s heart thumped against his chest. A note lay on top of the cake. He reached for it.
Hello my love, yes there was another device and a magical way of getting a GPS location. But let’s keep it quiet. Don’t leave any crumbs on the floor, and you can eat the note. And remember the one who sets the captives free. I will come visit soon, love ya.
