Are you going to tell me?
Kye
No.
Daisy
Why?
Kye
You’re so jealous and I like it. Now think of how I feel thinking about Mark in your bed every night.
Daisy
Mark has never been in my bed.
Kye
Interesting.
Why do you want me at your house?
Daisy
I need to talk to you
Kye
Every time you need to talk to me, you make a move on me. I can’t be near you for the sake of my own self-control.
Daisy
I don’t want to not be near you.
Kye
I am sorry, Daisy. Have I told you that? I’m sorry I left.
I hit the FaceTime call, needing to see his face, actually hear his voice, if he wasn’t coming over.
He didn’t pick up, and my heart broke.
Kye
I’m out, Daze.
I went to type out the words that I broke up with Mark and needed him, but it felt so pathetic now. I wanted to see him, tell him in person. So instead of hitting send, I headed back out for my last two hours of work, leaving my phone in the back and not checking it, even when his name came back up.
FORTY-FIVEDAISY
The house was already dark when I walked in after grabbing groceries and picking Bailey up. She had asked to see my dad, so I broke down and let him watch her for a few hours.
I held her hand harder, trying to keep her next to me as I fumbled my way into the house.
A crash came from the kitchen, the shattering glass echoing throughout the quiet house.
I dropped the groceries and grabbed Bailey, running back outside and racing to the car. My hands shook as I grabbed my phone, trying hard to focus as Bailey cried.
“It’s okay, honey, we’re okay,” I said, as the call connected.
“What do you mean, we’re okay? What’s wrong?” Kye asked.
“You’re not at my house, right?”
“No, I’m at mine. Why?”
“Because I think someone is inside mine.”
“Are you two inside?”
“No, I ran back to the car.”
“Okay, lock the doors. Did you already call the police?”
“No, I figured you could get here faster than them.” I already heard keys jingling and doors slamming.
“That’s not a lie. I’m already in the car. Did they hear you come in?”
