He nodded without comment.

Since he didn’t appear in the mood for conversation, she listened as they were serenaded by the occasional croak of a frog, mingled with a band of crickets. In the distance, two owls joined in the chorus. Above the tree line, stars blinked on one-by-one. When was the last time she actually watched the stars come out?

A passing breeze elicited a light shiver and she rubbed her arms. “Should have brought my sweater.”

Quick as a flash, she found herself tucked against his side. “Better?”

Better? It was heaven. His warmth seeped into her, filled all the places left hollow as she sighed and melted against him, curling her feet up beside her on the colorful cushion. “I thought we were going to be friends.”

“We are.”

“I’m not sure friends…cuddle like this.”

“Of course they do. What kind of friend would I be if I let you sit there and shiver?”

She folded her arms across her chest, confident her tremors had nothing to do with the cool night air.

He ran his hand slowly up and down her arm as he held her against him. That’s all. Just held her close as the swing slid gently back and forth, the light creak of the metal links adding to the therapeutic sounds of the night. Like a drug, his closeness, this moment in time, lulled her into euphoria, and a sense of rightness filled her.

Slowly, by degrees, she relaxed and rested her head on his shoulder. She closed her eyes when he placed a soft kiss to the top of her head. So soft, she almost missed it.

Time passed, how much, she couldn’t say. Lights blinked off inside the house. She pressed her cheek against the corded muscle of his chest, inhaling the intoxicating scent unique to him.

Engulfed by a desperate need to feel the touch of his lips, she pulled back and met his open, intense scrutiny.

“I don’t want to make another mistake,” she whispered.

“I know.”

“This is…this is nice.”

“It is for a fact.”

“…I want us to be friends.”

“Me, too.”

“But…I want to kiss you.” Those whispered words hung between them.

His gaze dropped to her lips, voice deepened by desire. “Me, too.”

Gradually, she eased herself upward, never taking her eyes off the prize—his mouth. He didn’t move as she brushed his lips lightly with her own, her tongue tracing the soft fullness before pressing her open mouth to his.

“Dad, there’s an –” Jason stopped in mid-sentence, quickly turning his back. “Sorry.”

Sam jerked away so fast she would have toppled from the swing if Coop hadn’t grabbed her.

“Dispatch is on the phone.” Jason said. “There’s some kind of fight out at Teddy’s and they need you there.”

Coop grabbed her hand as she scrambled off the seat.

“Doc…”

“I’ll see you later.” She couldn’t look at him as she pulled her hand free and darted through the door and up the stairs.

Oh my God! What am I doing?

Coop shaved with an unsteady hand. The fight at Teddy’s had taken most of the night to unravel with half a dozen people arrested. He didn’t get to bed until four a.m. Thanks to that almost-kiss, and his new roommate, he didn’t get much sleep. Again. Who knew dogs snored?

A soft knock on the bathroom door roused him from his fuzzy musings. “Come in, Son.”

Jason stepped inside and closed the door. He lowered the commode lid and sat down.

Coop smiled. How many father-son conversations took place in this room? He sobered when he realized how few of these moments remained for them.

His son was a grown man now. When had that happened?

Coop watched Jason’s reflection in the mirror as he continued to shave. “What’s up?”

Jason clasped his hands in front, then unfolded them and straightened.

“Just spit it out, Jay. Putting if off won’t change it.”

“I’m sorry about last night.”

Coop rinsed soap from his razor. “No apologies needed, but, thank you.”
