“Thanks, Babe, I knew we were going to be besties,” Heath says before continuing. “The tea around the watercooler is Mr. Bridden likes to have affairs with his secretaries, and when they get too clingy, he fires them. Jessica Leery has been there the longest at five years, and word on the street was he planned to serve his wife divorce papers and marry Jessica,” Heath says, taking a sip of his fruity drink.
“Oh, man, this is amazing,” he says before continuing, “Anyways, some think Jessica was pregnant, but others think she was the love of his life. They say he was always smiling and happy after she came on board.”
“Was that not the case before Jessica?” I ask, and Heath shakes his head.
“No, apparently, he was mean and grouchy. People hated working for him, and the only reason that the secretaries slept with him was for money. Now, how much of that is true and how much is rumor, no one can be sure, but the secretaries never lasted a year in that position.”
“What did they say about Jessica?” Shane asks.
“That she was the sweetest person they ever met. She remembered everyone’s birthday and anniversary if they were married. She always did something nice for everyone, and for the holidays she made sure everyone got a little something. No one had anything bad to say about her, except that she was possibly sleeping with a married man,” Heath says, taking another drink.
“No one liked Mrs. Bridden, she was considered a piranha around the office. Apparently, if she came in, she would boss everyone around and was mean to everyone, including her husband,” Nora says.
“That fits with the woman we met,” Shane mutters.
“How can we find out if he was really filing for divorce?” I muse.
“I can check court documents and see if anything has been filed with the clerk's office,” Shane responds as the waitress brings our food.
She places the steak dinner in front of me, and the aroma has my mouth watering. I cut into the steak, and it’s juicy. When I place it in my mouth, the flavors hit hard, the meat is tender, and I moan like it's the best thing I have ever eaten.
“Oh my God, this is amazing,” I say out loud to no one in particular as I take another bite.
I hear Nora and Heath giggle, but I don’t look up. I am thoroughly enjoying this steak. Once it’s gone, I can’t help but pout, wishing I still had more. I take a bite of the baked potato and salad, but neither one is what I want, so I push the plates away.
“Are you finished?” Shane asks me.
I sigh, then say, “Yeah, I guess so.”
“Was it really that good?” Shane asks.
“It was hands down the best meat I have ever had,” I answer with a wistful look at my plate.
Heath spits his drink out, laughing so hard. Nora can’t contain her laughter either, and I look at both of them like they have lost their minds.
“What?” I ask.
“Hunny, if that is the best piece of meat you have ever had, we need to find you a man,” Heath tells me as he wipes his mouth and pushes his plate away.
I look him straight in the eyes and say automatically, without thinking, “I didn’t say it was the best dick I ever had, just the best meat.”
Shane begins to choke on his food, Nora busts out laughing even harder than before, and I can feel my face turn red.
“I’m sorry, are you okay?” I quietly ask Shane as I pound on his back.
“Umm, yeah, I’m okay,” he says, and I quit pounding on his back.
I shake my head as Heath can’t contain his laughter, and Nora is beside him, trying to breathe through her laughter. I could just die of embarrassment right now.
“Thanks for the clarification, Hunny bun,” Heath says between his laughter.
“Glad I could clarify and entertain,” I mutter.
This only makes Nora and Heath laugh harder.
When she finally gets her composure back, she says, “Thank you, this has been the most fun I’ve had in the last six months.”
I want to ask why, but something inside me says not to bring it up, so I just nod and say, “Anytime.”
I can see Shane beside me shaking his head. I have no idea what he thinks about me, but if he had any respect for me today, I’m sure that just went out the window with my comment.
Finally, the waitress comes over with our checks, and as I reach for my purse to get my wallet, Shane takes my ticket and says, “I got this.”
“Thank you, but you don’t have to. I mean, if anyone should pay, it should be me. I almost killed you,” I tell him.
“I’m fine, and I got this,” he says a little more gruffly, and I let it be saying, “Thank you.”
Once the checks are taken care of, Heath and I say goodnight to both Detectives and get in our car to head back to the hotel.
“That was a fun dinner,” Heath says, still laughing. “You make everything so fun, Mya.”
“Me? What are you talking about? I just embarrassed the hell out of myself. I kind of forgot they were there when I said that,” I tell him, as I feel my face heat up again.
“Oh, your comment was great, but I was talking about you eating that steak. You moaned the entire time you were eating. I think McHotty was getting jealous of the steak.”
“What? No, he wasn’t. Did I really moan the whole time?” I ask, feeling mortified if it’s true.
“Yes, you did. Then when it was gone, you pouted,” Heath says, laughing. “Don’t worry, Mya, I think McHotty has the hots for you.”
