“Maybe it will be bigger.”
“You’re so good at assuming the worst case scenario,” he said.
“It’s my special talent.” With the return of her sarcasm, he knew she was feeling better.
“Like mine is beating you at Scrabble?”
“You cheat.”
“If you mean I cheat because my brain is five times bigger than yours, I suppose you’re right.”
“Your brain isn’t bigger, but that ego is about to crowd us off the bed.”
“I thought you told me your special talent is hiding your emotions.”
“Brooke ruined all that for me. She and her stupid advice.” Rylie raised her voice to imitate Brooke. “‘Be honest. Be vulnerable.’ Look where that advice got me.”
“It got you right here in the arms of the man who loves you more than life.” Jarrett brushed his lips across her forehead. “I love you so much.”
“Can you prove it?” Her voice rose in challenge, starting the game they loved.
“I’ve got chocolate,” he said.
“You could take me to a dance.” Her rosy lips parted, enticing him to steal a kiss.
“How about a tango?” He waggled his eyebrows.
“Now?” She choked, her wide eyes darting to the open door.
“Yes.” He stood up and ripped his shirt off, eliciting a gasp from his wife. He reached for her and pulled her from the bed.
“Jarrett! No! We can’t!”
“But I have to tango with you, to prove I love you.”
With a flourish of his hand, he dipped her back on his arm, her head inches from the carpet, and she squealed with laughter. As he bent his head to kiss her, his prosthetic foot slipped. He wobbled. She dropped to the carpet, and he fell beside her, both of them laughing until there were tears in their eyes.
“Okay,” she said, attempting to catch her breath. “I think you proved it.”
“There’s one more thing I can do,” he said, propping on one elbow to look down at her face.
He moved closer, and her pupils dilated, her blue eyes darkening. His lips pressed to hers, worshipping her mouth with the reverence she deserved. Willing her to know just how much he loved her, he deepened the kiss, pouring out his soul.
Still breathing in her essence, he pulled away and peered into the most beautiful eyes he’d ever seen, reading the love that was written so clearly.
“Do you believe me, now?” he whispered.
Her lips curved in a blissful smile. “Always.”
And they lived happily ever after!

Excerpt
“Hold on,” Cole Miller said, his video call image obviously moving to a different room in his house, probably seeking more privacy. “Let me get this straight. You think you need to back out of the Phantom partnership to protect us from some mafia-type guy with a vendetta against your stepfather?”
“Chester got a manila envelope in the mail, full of photos. All candid shots. The kids on the front steps of their school. His daughter in the grocery store. His son riding his bike.”
“That’s vile!” Cole looked physically ill, probably imagining if his own daughters were threatened.
“Now you see why I think you should keep your distance,” Logan said, a shiver racking him, a result of the pervading chill of fear that had blanketed him since his stepdad’s confession the previous day.
Cole’s expression still held more anger than fear. He obviously wasn’t persuaded of the danger to his own family and friends. “I assume he hired someone to look at the envelope, right?”
