“On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, ‘Let us go across to the other side.’ And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?’ And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, ‘Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?’ And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, ‘Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?’” Zion stopped reading and looked out at the crowd, pausing to allow the words to settle over everybody.

It was so quiet that Pat could hear the humming of the central heating and air. No screaming. Just peace. Instead of making him excited, he felt unsettled by the change. His mind was not used to the quiet.

“Sometimes you may be led into a storm. Even if you do everything right. They obeyed God and were faced with the wind and the waves.” Zion closed his book, grasped it in both hands, and walked around the podium again. “But he is peace. I do strongly believe God has provided us with treatments for mental illness to alleviate suffering, however, the only way to have true peace is through Jesus Christ.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

HARMONY STOOD IN Pat and Arrow’s bedroom early on Monday morning. She noticed Pat’s bed was barely disturbed like he had slept in one place the whole night. A book sat on the side table that looked like a complicated textbook about computer code that Harmony had no interest in. When she walked up to Arrow’s bed with her cleaning supply caddy in one hand and towel in the other, she observed blankets were everywhere and the fitted sheet was slightly pulled off one corner. She smiled to herself, warmth spreading from her heart to her toes.

No matter how much she tried to deny it, she was developing feelings for him and this snapshot of his personality was endearing to her.

She hummed to herself as she set down her supplies on the cedar chest at the end of Arrow’s bed and began remaking it. At first, she didn’t notice that somebody walked into the room from the bathroom, but as they made their way around Pat’s bed and towards her she sensed them. Spinning around she saw the apparition. Her blond dreads were floating in the air like she was swimming in invisible water. She looked sorrowful like her eyes were about to spill over with tears.

“Who are you?” Harmony demanded, her hands balling into fists as if ready to fight.

The woman raised her right hand and pointed at Harmony with an elegant index finger.

“Don’t hurt me, please.” Harmony’s voice quivered.

The woman continued to keep her finger pointed directly at Harmony as she glided towards her. Goose bumps erupted all over her arms and she shook in fear. Harmony couldn’t move from the spot where she stood.

When the woman was about a foot away, she pulled a wallet from her pocket and opened it to reveal her photo ID. She shoved it in Harmony’s face and she saw the same sullen face on the ID as the ghostly form holding it.

“Heidi Gomez-Brown?” Harmony read aloud.

Heidi nodded slowly.

“Why are you following me, Heidi?”

The door shuddered as a key was thrust into the keyhole and turned. The sound caught Harmony’s attention so she whipped around to see the door swinging open. Arrow stood in the opening. He looked mildly surprised, but not nearly as surprised as he should have been upon seeing her apparition in his room.

“Hello. To what do I owe this pleasure?” Arrow asked kindly.

“I…” Harmony glanced behind her and nothing was there. She quickly decided she didn’t want to explain just now. “I’m doing my job assignment.” She shrugged, unsure what else to say.

“Can I help?”

“No. It’s fine. I’ll be back later.” Harmony picked up her cleaning supplies and rushed toward the exit

Arrow held out an arm to stop her. “You don’t have to go on my account.”

“I…” Before Heidi had appeared, Harmony would have been excited for the opportunity to stay here and speak with him. Now she felt scared to be in this space. “I’m not sure I’m supposed to keep cleaning when residents come back to their rooms.” She said lamely.

Arrow’s brow wrinkled up in confusion. “ I think we’ll be fine for the moment. Besides…” Arrow paused and scratched the back of his neck so he didn’t have to look her in the eyes. “I wanted to talk to you. I wanted to be open with you…about my past. How Doc and I met.” He gestured with his other arm to the sitting area in the room.

Harmony hesitated but once Arrow sat on the couch, she sat across from him in the recliner and set her cleaning supplies on the floor. She was curious now and could sense that this was hard for Arrow to talk about.

“I used to sell microchips. So, I was just another pharmaceutical rep to Dr. Evers. We talked now and then but we didn’t get close until the trial.”

“Trial for…what?” Harmony asked tentatively. She was afraid to know the answer.

“Well, I got mixed up in a dealing ring. I had hacker codes for the chips that I was selling to individual patients. I thought I was helping alleviate suffering but I just was one of the pawns aiding a bigger dealer ring. With Clive’s testimony about my character, I almost got off without prison time until my fiance testified against me.” Arrow rubbed his beard thoughtfully as if trying to recall more of the story, but Harmony could see that his eyes were sparkling with unshed tears.

“Why would she do that?” Harmony asked finally.

“She was scared.” He shrugged. “But it was the nail in the coffin. Since I was only one of many, they gave me a deal but I still was in prison for 5 years.”

She knew this fact should bother her. Harmony was trying to focus on being compassionate, but the jealous thought kept flitting through her mind, “He had a fiance.” She finally was able to shove that out and replace it with a stronger thought, “But he’s here with you now.” She placed her hand on his knee. He stared at it for a moment and then wrapped his bigger and stronger hand on top of hers. She could feel electricity and warmth flowing from his fingertips and up her arm.

“When I got out, they had me come here to transition from prison life to the outside world. It really helped.”

“Did you see your fiance again?” Harmony asked.

“No.” He shook his head sadly. “I shouldn’t but I miss her sometimes.”

“Oh.” She said simply, still trying hard to conceal the jealousy that rose again.

“That door is never going to open again, though. I am working hard to move on.” His eyes then met hers. “So, what’s your story?” He squeezed her hand and leaned back into the corner of the sofa to get comfortable.

She missed the warmth from his hand but reluctantly released his knee. “Well, nothing complicated. I worked in an office. My mom is Cuban and my dad is white and only god knows where.” She shrugged. “But you know that already.”

“Yeah, I do.” He chuckled.

“Clive isn’t really that bad.” Harmony said changing the subject. “I wasn’t sure I liked him at first.”

“He’s an alright dude when you get to know him better. His arrogance is just a defense mechanism.” Arrow said. “But I understand why you didn’t like him at first.”

“How’s Pat?”
