About the Author
Chapter 1Angel
My heart races just as much now as it did when I first started this job.
Truth be told, the rush is why I do this. It’s not because I wanted to follow in Dad’s footsteps or because my brothers Lucas, Mason, and Hudson were all firefighters.
No, it’s the pure adrenaline of it all.
It’s the only thing that makes me feel alive.
I grip the edge of my seat as we round the corner, and I spot the mangled vehicles ahead just as we skid to a halt. Today is gonna be a long one. I just started my shift not twenty minutes ago and was about to head out to help with a garage fire the other crew had mostly under control, but when the call came in, I was told to come here instead.
My boots hit the pavement with a thud as I jump out of the truck and head over to the scene. I scan for immediate dangers—fire, smoke, spilled fuel.
Ethan, an EMT buddy of mine, runs over to me.
“Your ex-sister-in-law caused this,” he huffs, voice strained with urgency. “The car reeks of tequila. They got Tiffany out and loaded up fast. Just left for the hospital.”
I freeze when he tells me who was involved and barely register anything after that. “Avery? Was she with Tiffany?” I ask frantically and the split second it takes him to answer is the longest of my life.
Ethan shakes his head, his face grim. “Just got here myself, but I think Tiffany was alone. There’s a female trapped in the other car. Conscious, not sure how bad injuries are yet.”
