“Who is listed as the account holder now?” I asked slowly, keeping my jaw, and body, firmly in place.
Maxwell licked his lips nervously as he searched through his records. His hands were shaking, and he was covered in sweat when he turned back to me.
“There is no record of who it is. Every time I try, I get a message saying I don’t have clearance for that information. I’ve heard of messages like this, but never actually seen them before.”
“And what does it mean?” I let Keith take over, or that scene I was working to avoid would be coming very soon.
“It means that the owner is someone with very high clearance. Someone with so much pull that only certain people can see their information.”
“And…” I practically hissed. I needed a real answer.
“Government officials. High-level government employees. Politicians. Or maybe even the really big stars. People with more money than God, basically.”
That was confusing enough to make me pause.
“Has the government frozen the account for some reason?” Thank you, Keith! I hadn’t thought of that.
Maybe the siblings had gone to the police after all, and that was why all this was happening. But then… why hadn’t the police raided our building yet?
Maxwell shook his head side to side rapidly. His black curls flew around his head. “Oh, no. That would be an entirely different message. I also wouldn’t have been able to do the deposit with a freeze.”
“Why were we allowed to deposit money into an account that says it does not belong to us?”
Maxwell’s eyes jumped from Keith back to me, probably grateful I had let him take over the reins of this meeting. “Well, anyone who has the account number can deposit money into an account. It’s really only the withdrawals, changes, and stuff like that that requires the account holder listed.”
I startled the man when I randomly pushed out of my seat and stalked out of the office. I headed straight for the exit. Nothing was going to be solved sitting there talking to him.
Keith joined me not two minutes later. I leaned against the building, watching the pedestrians walking by, going about their merry little way. My eyes lifted and scanned all the tall buildings in the city. I couldn’t help but wonder if Fiona was in one of those offices right now, looking down on us… laughing at me.
“What now, boss?”
I pushed off the wall, straightened my suit jacket, and looked him dead in the eye. “Now we find us a rat. The only way to fix this is to find the one who did it all.”
“And then?”
BoBo pulled up in my black Aviator and stepped out. We chose the bigger car today, so Keith and I could both fit in the back without being squished.
“Then we teach those siblings who the real boss is.”
