ā€œIt doesnā€™t matter why,ā€ I returned swiftly.

ā€œIt sure as fuck does ā€˜cause you, Circe, girl, youā€¦ you are the product of your mother and me. I didnā€™t love that one before death and all this time after it for foolish reasons. I did it ā€˜cause you got a love like that it doesā€¦ notā€¦ die. And Iā€™m tellinā€™ you, darlinā€™, I took that bullet instead ā€˜a her, she would be lookinā€™ at you with that same dead in her eyes as Iā€™m lookinā€™ at you with now. The same dead thatā€™s in your eyes as youā€™re lookinā€™ at me. We Quinns, we donā€™t fall in love. We fall in love. And you, girl, youā€™re in love so what I wanna know is, why the fuck you used up all your magical power, pixie dust and shit and came home when you got his baby inside you and you couldnā€™t know that youā€™d ever get back?ā€

I couldnā€™t hold up against his words so I didnā€™t. I just told him because I might as well get it over with.

ā€œHe found out I wasnā€™t from his world.ā€

ā€œSo?ā€

ā€œHe thought I wasā€¦ wrong. A changeling. He thought I bewitched him. Theyā€™re different, primitive. But even hereā€¦ itā€™s only because youā€™re you and youā€™re my Pop and you love the way you love that you got it with Circe and what happened with me. Any other man, the Circe that came here would be screwed. Not you. She was lucky. Iā€¦ā€ I sucked in breath and finished, ā€œwas not so lucky.ā€

ā€œSo he donā€™t listen?ā€

ā€œHe listened, he just didnā€™t believe me.ā€

ā€œSo you told him and then what?ā€ Pop asked.

ā€œIā€¦ well, I guess I spirited myself away.ā€

ā€œRight then?ā€ Pop pushed and I blinked again.

ā€œNo, umā€¦ maybe a few hours later.ā€

He shook his head. ā€œRight, well, gotta say, girl, as much as I donā€™t wanna give that asshole nothinā€™, this I can see. This shitā€¦ itā€™s fuckinā€™ nuts. Took me a few days to sort my head out when Circe told me what was goinā€™ on. Thought youā€™d gone ā€˜round the bend.

You think for a second to give that asshole a day or two to come to terms with this shit before you hightailed yourā€¦ pregnant, I might addā€¦ ass outta there?ā€

I stared at him and I did this because no, no I had not.

He shook his head but his eyes never left me. ā€œNo, you didnā€™t. Not my Circe.ā€ He looked to the ceiling and said, ā€œShee-it,ā€ again before his gaze came back to me. ā€œYouā€™ll never change. Always leadinā€™

with your heart, lettinā€™ your emotions get the better of you and not thinkinā€™ with your head.ā€

Iā€™d heard that before.

ā€œPop ā€“ā€

He leaned forward again. ā€œGirl, you listen to your father.ā€

Oh shit. He was worse than Diandra when he had something to say.

He kept at me. ā€œI do not want to lose you. Iā€™ll tell you that right now, you go again, it would break my heart. But you go, I would know you went and that grandbaby of mine would have his daddy and youā€¦ you would have him too. And I can see by that dead in your eyes that if you went back, youā€™d have what I had, what Iā€™ve held precious all these years, what I had with your mother before she was lost to us. And I know this, darlinā€™, I had to go to a whole other fuckinā€™ world where primitive people lived and I had to piss in

the trees and take a shit by a river, I do not fuckinā€™ care. Your mother was there, that is where Iā€™d fuckinā€™ be.ā€

My eyes filled with tears and I whispered, ā€œPop.ā€

ā€œAnd Iā€™ll go on to tell you this, it would be a hard drive, the hardest in my life, but you want me to take you, Iā€™ll drive you to that witch and Iā€™ll hug you hard before you go but youā€™ll go knowinā€™ that even though Iā€™ll miss you, Iā€™ll be happy for you, knowinā€™ you had what I lost.ā€

I closed my eyes and looked away.

Then I said to the wall. ā€œYou donā€™t get it. Heā€¦ it wasā€¦ the whole thing was hard, being with him, adapting to that world, but I stuck by him.ā€ I looked back at Pop. ā€œI stuck by him with every trial thrown at me and when I say that, Pop, I mean I watched women plunging knives in their stomachs and men having their legs cut off and heads sliced clean from their bodies.ā€ Popā€™s eyes got big but I kept going. ā€œAnd I took a manā€™s lifeā€¦ well, one and half men actually butā€¦ whatever. I stuck by it. I stuck by Lahn. Through everything that world and he threw at me. He had one trial, Pop, one and he didnā€™t have to witness anything that turned his stomach, he didnā€™t take his first life, he didnā€™t get betrayed by someone he cared about and nearly lose his life because of it. He just had to believe in me. Simple. Just believe in me. He didnā€™t. He killed what I felt for him. He killed it dead. I donā€™t have the power to go back and Circe doesnā€™t have the power to send me. And Iā€™m not going to that witch, Pop. Iā€™m never going back. Iā€™ll miss it, I made friends, I had a pet tigress who could talk to me and I was a fucking queen for Godā€™s sake. Life was strange and it was insane but it was also good. But Iā€™m not going back. Ever. If what he killed in me never comes alive again, so be it. Iā€™ll have what you had and Iā€™ll make do. Iā€™ll have his child and just like you, thatā€™s going to be good enough for me.ā€

Pop stared at me and I held his eyes.

Then he came to the realization heā€™d come to often in my life and that was the fact that when I made up my mind about something,

when my heart led me down the path I was determined to take, he wasnā€™t going to be able to sway me.

I knew this when he asked, ā€œYou were a queen?ā€

I closed my eyes, sucked in breath then opened them. ā€œYes, the true, golden warrior queen of the Korwahk nation.ā€

He blinked then muttered, ā€œHoly fuck.ā€

ā€œDamn straight,ā€ I muttered back and, fuck me, I did it proudly.

He kept staring at me. Then he asked, ā€œGirl, how do you kill half a man? They got half men there?ā€

I relaxed. Then I grinned.

Then I said, ā€œPick me up for Circeā€™s party, Iā€™ll tell you stories on the way there.ā€

He shook his head as he stood, muttering, ā€œNot sure I wanna know.ā€

This was probably wise.

His eyes came to me.

ā€œBut Iā€™m gonna listen,ā€ he said softly.

Yep, that was Pop. Heā€™d always listen.

ā€œThen Iā€™ll tell you,ā€ I said softly back.

He nodded. Then, ā€œHis name was Lahn?ā€

I clenched my teeth to battle the pain. When I had it in check, I nodded. ā€œDax Lahn, king of Korwahk and the mightiest warrior of the Korwahk Horde.ā€

Popā€™s lips twitched. Then he noted, ā€œGirl, you aimed high. Proud

ā€˜a you, catchinā€™ the eye of a king.ā€

I rolled my eyes.

Pop moved to the door and I opened the drawer with my purse in it. As I was standing, I noticed he hadnā€™t moved through and I stopped and looked at him.

ā€œYou sure, darlinā€™?ā€ he whispered.
