22 CIA provided Salinger a White House briefing “on the background of Mr. Ilias Dimitrakopoulos.” 2/17/1961, Pierre Salinger file, JFKL; memorandum for [redacted], Discussion with Mr. Pierre Salinger Regarding Mr. Ilias Dimitrakopoulos, “At the end of briefing Mr. Salinger requested and received copies of the classified summary correspondence which related directly to his interest in this case.” CIA, no. 147, 2/17/1961; Salinger on 2/16/1961 telephoned J. Edgar Hoover to accelerate an updated FBI check on the missing Greek journalist. Hoover immediately replied, sharing 1959 Naval intelligence information that “He writes reams on where other people stand but…no one connected with our embassy knows where he stands.” FBI added information about his having been married to a woman who was investigated for having had a roommate who defected to the Russians. 30 According to the CIA, the President and DCI met to discuss further EPD actions, including efforts to “seal Dimitrakopoulos off from sources of ‘exclusive interviews.’ ” On 8/30/1962, the CIA followed up earlier conversations with Salinger to impress on him that EPD was much more dangerous than “just a pest.” Salinger requested and received more detailed derogatory (and false) information.
31 Years later, when Elias accused the CIA, at Kennedy’s press secretary’s instigation, of being responsible for the break-in caper, Salinger didn’t deny his role but told a reporter “I just don’t remember anything about that.” Jeff Nesmith, “Did CIA Ransack Greek Journalist’s Office,” Cox News Service, 1/7/2000
