So much had happened since I was last with Jezz. I’d burned out my cloak charm and gave my reverse crystal to a produce merchant for food and materials for the underground. As for my Skull Crusher, bandits got to it. I barely escaped with my life from those tan orcs. Everything else I pretty much gave away to the survivors of PP. The sammies were converted into even more food from the few orcs who accepted me as per their shaman’s request, from a small village that was closest to Senterrian grounds.
Regardless, I had to use my teleportation crystal to save on travel time.
On this route, there couldn’t be any pit-stops. I was short on travel vouchers with that crystal, and it’d be up to Trin and the scouts to manage the food supply while I was gone. As for my daily duty of surveying the hazmat zones, I’d done that earlier, so all that was left to do was open the map and find a drop zone in Mavriel.
“Shit, why is my stomach twisting into knots,” I whispered to myself. Figured it was high time I felt the pressure of fighting alone, as a single man army, with the stress of coming back victorious for an endangered society. “Kill the doubt, Silas. Jezz believes in you. You should believe in yourself, too. You can do this!” I said, before spotting an area on the map to land. “There, this area seems pretty empty. About 4,400 fae. A pretty low population considering the other areas. Of course, this isn’t really updated in real time. In fact, I can’t tell when this census was last observed. Hmm, that’s strange…”
I took a minute to think to myself about the map, and then thought about how deceiving it might be. “An area of magic-wielding fae, I doubt I could measure anything to facts. This just might be a fucking trick.”
“Well, you’d be right in that regard,” a smooth baritone voice behind me said, triggering me to stretch out my cyber arm defensively.
I pivoted and pointed my weapon to a tall blond man wearing a humble smile, capping slightly under my height. The stranger in a black cloak had an ensemble on that resembled that of a priest. He took a step back and waved his hands in the air sheepishly, and then he fixed the frame of his rectangular glasses and confessed, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.”
“You were following me, why?!” I questioned him seriously.
“Truthfully, debating whether or not to join you on your crusade. Clearly, I have decided to accompany you by revealing myself. Of course, that is, if you’d have me?” He cleared his throat. “If you would be so kind, may you please put the arm piece down so we may talk civilly?” His sophisticated tone begged. He sounded like a nobleman, his intense blue eyes begging me to consider his offer.
Honestly, I’d never seen this guy around Prism Point. Granted, I hadn’t really been in Thalian long let alone the underground refugee camp. But there was something about him that was tossing red flags. He wasn’t like the other volunteers, and I had a feeling that he was even at a higher level than me…
There was an energy to him that wasn’t like the others…
“All right,” I said, putting my gear down. “How about you start with a name?”
“Certainly. My name is Rufian. And I am a traveling priest.”
“A traveling priest? Doing what, exactly?”
“Why, spreading the good word of our goddess Alzera-Kar, of course!” he said with an overly chipper front. “These are truly trying times, where one's faith is tested beyond humane limits! And it is up to me to guide the soul to the right path. It is a duty I do not take lightly, and it is one I take deep pride in.” He bowed respectfully. “Alzera-Kar is the goddess of light and purity, of peace and love. She is the one who guides us through the darkness of this world, and shows us the way to salvation,” he continued; his voice soft and melodic. “She is a beacon of hope for all those who are lost and seeking the righteous way. And I am her most trusted servant. I am her tool of divine will, her instrument of prosperity and order. And you are her chosen one, her mighty hammer of justice and strong will! You and I make a great team, and together we can cleanse the lands, bringing back luster to all of Thalian.”
Boy, he sure was coming in strong, wasn't he?
“I can see that the light of Alzera-Kar is already shining upon you, my friend. Let us show the others the way to enlightenment.”
“A traveling priest, sharing the good word of Alzera-Kar. If that’s the case, I have to ask—why are you in Prism?”
“Why, for the same reason as the others, of course!”
“Protection?” I said before cocking my head to the side and reading his level. Instantly, my eyes blew up. “You’re at level 60…”
“That I am! And I am very self-sustainable.”
I narrowed my eyes at Rufian, unsure of whether to trust him or not. He was too calm, too collected, and too powerful for someone who claimed to be a simple traveling priest.
Rufian smiled, his blue eyes twinkling with amusement. I scrutinized him, taking in his every detail. He was well spoken, well dressed, and a bit over eager to help. However, the fact that he was a traveling priest meant that he had some experience outside of Prism Point, and maybe, outside of Senterra in general. That being said, it was his high level that caught my attention. It was rare to find someone that strong in the refugee camp, the highest I’d seen around 20-40 from my scouting team. The fact that he’d kept to himself all this time made me wonder what his story was.
