He nodded like he expected me to say that. “I can’t guarantee that some of our men won’t cause any problems, they want revenge for the death of the pakhan. I will also keep searching for who killed my brother.”
“I appreciate the warning. We will be ready and waiting.”
He nodded again and walked toward the stairs, Keith following behind.
I dropped onto the small couch and put my head in my hands. When I heard the ding of the elevator opening, I quietly waited for Keith to come in. What I got instead were smaller hands pushing me to lean back on the couch. Then one slender leg moved to either side of me. My eyes trailed up from the boy shorts she was wearing to the sports bra.
“You were playing with fire tonight.” I told my love, rubbing my hands up her bare legs.
“I told you I would make you pay for the car.” Her teasing smile quickly melted away. “I’m sorry you have trouble with the Russians now.”
I outlined Fiona’s bottom lip with my thumb. “That wasn’t your fault. Ivan would have found a way to force his hand sooner or later. What did you show his brother anyway?”
She smirked. “A picture of him with someone that was most definitely not his wife. The way the other two tried not to laugh, I’m sure some already know about his affair.”
“Many mafia leaders have mistresses, what’s the problem with that?”
“Yes, many of them do. But how many of them have a mister instead of a mistress?”
“Ah. Yes. I can see that being a problem. As the new pakhan, he is responsible for producing an heir. Can’t happen without a woman.”
Fiona leaned forward and kissed my chin. “A lot can’t happen without a woman.”
I chuckled and kissed her. “Why didn’t you go back to sleep?”
She shrugged. “I sleep better with you there. I was just checking to see where you were when I saw you online looking for me.” She was teasing me again, but I didn’t care.
“Yes, I was curious because I hadn’t ever seen your name on the approved list.”
“Because it’s not there.”
I poked her in the stomach and made her squirm. “No, because you never gave me control back of my own company, like you said you did.”
“I never said that. I told you I would let you back in, and I did.” She bit her lip and moved away again. She twisted her hands nervously. “Are you mad?”
“No, not at all. I trust you. I know you have my back.” I cursed when I saw a tear fall on her cheek. I brought her back to me and kissed it. “Why are you crying? What’s wrong?”
“Nothing’s wrong. I’m just more emotional lately. And no, before you ask, I am not pregnant. The IUD is still firmly in place.”
