Irish Soda Bread
Ingredients
4 cups all-purpose flour
4 tablespoons white sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup margarine, softened
1 egg
1¼ cups buttermilk, divided
¼ cup butter, melted
How to Prepare
Preheat your oven to 375ºF.
Lightly grease a large baking sheet.
Place flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl and mix well.
Add margarine and mix well.
Add egg and 1 cup of buttermilk and mix until a dough forms.
Place the dough onto a lightly floured surface and with your hands, knead slightly.
With your hands, shape the dough into a 1½-inch high, flat, and round disk.
Arrange the dough disk onto the prepared baking sheet.
Place melted butter and remaining buttermilk in a small bowl and mix well.
Coat the loaf with butter mixture.
With a floured sharp knife, cut an X on top of the dough disk.
Bake for approximately 45–50 minutes or until golden-brown, coating with the remaining butter mixture 2–3 times.
Remove the baking sheet from the oven and coat the hot with melted butter.
Place the bread onto a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
With a sharp knife, cut the bread loaf into desired-sized slices and serve.
