Irish Soda Bread

Ingredients

       4 cups all-purpose flour

       4 tablespoons white sugar

       1 tablespoon baking powder

       1 teaspoon baking soda

       ½ teaspoon salt

       ½ cup margarine, softened

       1 egg

       1¼ cups buttermilk, divided

       ¼ cup butter, melted

How to Prepare

Preheat your oven to 375ºF.

Lightly grease a large baking sheet.

Place flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl and mix well.

Add margarine and mix well.

Add egg and 1 cup of buttermilk and mix until a dough forms.

Place the dough onto a lightly floured surface and with your hands, knead slightly.

With your hands, shape the dough into a 1½-inch high, flat, and round disk.

Arrange the dough disk onto the prepared baking sheet.

Place melted butter and remaining buttermilk in a small bowl and mix well.

Coat the loaf with butter mixture.

With a floured sharp knife, cut an X on top of the dough disk.

Bake for approximately 45–50 minutes or until golden-brown, coating with the remaining butter mixture 2–3 times.

Remove the baking sheet from the oven and coat the hot with melted butter.

Place the bread onto a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

With a sharp knife, cut the bread loaf into desired-sized slices and serve.
